The jobs and responsibilities of men and woman definitely play a huge role in society in the Dominican Republic. It is stated that, "about one-quarter of the lower-class people are unemployed." (2015 Advameg, Inc.), However, women tend to have the more beneficial opportunity of getting jobs over men because they are paid a lot less; but Women still play the role of the "house wife" and taking care of the household however, do not make enough money to be considered a middle class citizen. Usually in lower classed citizen families, they father does not live in the house. However, middle classed citizens in their family, the father is the dominant figure whom upholds the values for them. Since they are able to make enough money to get by, the family receives a better education. According to a certified website, it is stated that there are three types of marriages in the Dominican Republic, these include, church marriages, civil marriages, and consensual/ common law unions. Usually common law unions are more popular among the lower class families and church marriages and civil marriages are more common in upper class families. (2015 Advameg, Inc.) Back in the slave periods, couples were not allowed to get married because their families were broken up and separated, obviously now times have changed and it is more encouraged to have a family and children now. In an article, it was stated that men are the financial providers and overall decision makers and women honestly have no particular say. Women are mostly in charge of nurturing the children and her husband. Although, women are still able to work and make money for their families as well. In the Dominican Republic there is not a defined gender neutrality. In a study by Georgetown University students, an intern went to help package toys for children and they were very separated to the point where "pink and dolls are strictly for girls, where as blue toy cars are for boys." (Berkley Center For Religion, Peace & World Affairs at Georgetown University) To be honest, I cannot be surprised by what I have learned from these different articles explaining the gender roles in society of the Dominican Republic. It is their culture that they have been brought up on to not have exact "gender equality." Gender equality is overall practiced in the United States, but there are still certain people that do not believe women should work and have the same benefits as men. We are accustomed to think in which the way society wants us to think. In the Dominican Republic they believe that women are allowed to have jobs, but their main job and priority must be their family. In the United States, it is completely different because now a days we have stay at home fathers, and many women have jobs to support their families in that circumstance. All in all, it is not surprising to me that culture is different over in the Dominican Republic. I am happy that over time things have changed there and are now able to get married to whomever they please and it is encouraged to have a family because to us in America, that is part of the American Dream. For example, globalization is seen in the Dominican Republic in numerous ways, one of them being in Education. The government is trying to create more opportunities that will make the students of the Dominican Republic successful citizens. Many foreign and non-profit organizations, and religious organizations are part of the solution to globalizing the Dominican Republics educational systems, by setting up mission schools all over this country. This is giving an opportunity to students of all social status' a fair chance at education. Next, the Dominican Republic is a country that is a member that participates in the World Trade Organization. This means that other countries are regularly trading goods and other opportunities for their markets. This is one way that the Dominican Republic stays involved with globalization by reaching out to other countries. They are involved in "telecommunications, express delivery, computer and related services, tourism, energy, transport, construction and engineering, and the financial, insurance, audio/visual and entertainment, professional, and environmental industries," with other countries which makes it beneficial for each country. Specifically, in the Dominican Republic, their relations with the United States are extremely well. The Dominican Government has been supportive of many U.S. initiatives dealing with related activities. Both governments cooperate together and work closely together on issues that are similar in both countries which demonstrates globalization as both countries come together. There are definitely "pros" and "cons" of globalization in the Dominican Republic, but the way I see it, there is more of a positive impact than there is harm. The educational system is expanding by non-profit organizations donating time and money to fulfill the needs for children. Also, trade is basically a necessity for building strong connections with other countries, this prevents fights between countries and essentially wars from starting. The cons of globalization can include miscommunication between countries which can start a fight and ruin trade between countries. However, having alliances between countries is an extreme benefit for obvious reasons.
